The Alma is one of Louis Vuitton’s most structured bags — a rigid top-handle silhouette that’s been in production since 1934. It comes in more materials than almost any other LV style, which creates wide value variation even within the same “Alma” name.

The Vernis premium
Vernis (patent leather embossed with the LV monogram) Almas command a significant premium over canvas — but only in colors that have held up well. Amarante (deep burgundy), Rose Pop, and Pomme d’Amour (red) are the most in-demand. Beige and light yellow Vernis Almas often show color transfer from denim or dark fabrics and sell at steep discounts when marked. Always inspect the back panel carefully under good light.
Authentication
- Date code location: On a round leather piece at the base of the zipper pull, or on an interior tab near the pocket.
- Lock and key: The Alma has a brass padlock with a long key. Authentic locks are weighty, have “LOUIS VUITTON” embossed cleanly on the face, and the number on the lock matches the number on the key tag.
- Zipper: S-Lock zipper — not YKK. The zipper should run smooth and stop cleanly at both ends.
- Canvas seams: The Alma’s curved shape means the canvas seam runs along the bottom. On genuine bags, the monogram motif is intentionally cut and aligned at this seam — not random.
- Feet: Four brass feet on the bottom, all matching in finish. Missing or loose feet are a wear issue, not an authenticity signal, but replace them before resale.
