The key to Mulberry authentication is knowing which era your bag is from and what markers apply.
1. Made in England vs. overseas production
This is the most important distinction in the Mulberry resale market:

2. The postman’s lock
The Mulberry postman’s lock (a brass toggle clasp based on an old postal bag fastening) is used on the Bayswater, Roxanne, and related styles. On genuine bags:
- Solid brass — heavy and substantial, not lightweight alloy
- The “MULBERRY” engraving on the lock face should be deep and clean
- The mechanism should operate with a positive click and hold closed securely
- Fakes often use hollow locks that rattle slightly when shaken
3. The tree logo and label
- The Mulberry tree logo (used since the brand’s founding in 1971) should be clean and consistent — branches and roots symmetrical
- Interior label should clearly state “Mulberry England” or “Mulberry” with country of manufacture
- The label fabric should be woven, not printed, on genuine vintage pieces
4. Leather quality
Early Mulberry (pre-2002) used a distinctive heavy natural grain leather — often Darwin or Congo leather — that develops a beautiful deep patina. It feels thick and waxy. Later leather is lighter and softer. If a bag claims to be English-made but the leather feels thin or synthetic, verify the label carefully.
